To connect AutoMind to your vehicle, you’ll first need to plug in the dongle — and that means finding your car’s OBD-II port.
All vehicles from 2001 onwards have one — it’s a standard diagnostic socket that gives us access to the vehicle’s onboard systems.
The port may be hidden, have a flap, or be in different colours — but it will always look like this…

Here’s how to find yours:
- Check your car’s manual. Look in the index for “On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)” or “Diagnostic Connector.”
2.

Common locations include:
- Most commonly – Under the driver’s side of the dashboard (usually above the pedals or under the steering column)
- In the front drivers side door front column, near the bonnet release (many BMWs have their’s here hidden behind flap labelled OBD)
- Behind plastic dashboard trim — driver or passenger side
- In the centre console — under a flap or behind the ashtray (particularly Opel/Vauxhall marques)
- In the glovebox — often behind a trim panel on either side (particularly French marques) [developer note: make this bullet point RED to match the colour on the image location]
- Under the passenger dashboard, usually near the door side
3. You can also try our OBD Port Finder. If your exact car isn’t listed, try a similar model from the same brand.
4. Or, simply do a quick Google search — try: [your car’s year, make, model] + “obd port location” – e.g. “2017 Mini Cooper obd port location”
Still stuck? Open a support ticket quoting your vehicles year, make, model and that you require assistance to find the OBD port – we’ll find it for you, no problem!
Once your AutoMind dongle is plugged in correctly, you’ll see a red LED light. Most other dongles have similar indicators.
⚠️ On some cars, the OBD port area is tight and won’t fit a standard dongle. If that’s the case, you’ll need an OBD extension cable. Just make sure to choose one with a compact end to fit in snugly.
You should be able to pick one up on either Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=obd+extension+cable
or eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw==obd+extension+cable for a fair price.
